MORNING: TRANSFER TO SEVILLE WITH STOP AT EL COTO DE LAS CANTERAS
After breakfast meet your bus for your trip to Seville.
On the way stop at El Coto de las Canteras, sometimes called the “Petra of Andalucía,” a remarkable cultural and historical site which started as an ancient sandstone quarry, worked since Iberian and Roman times, that provided stone for many of Osuna’s historic buildings. In more recent decades, particularly from the late 1990s onward, the quarry has been restored and transformed into a cultural attraction. Local artist Francisco Valdivia Gómez carved dramatic reliefs and sculptures into its walls, highlighting its heritage and giving the site its striking resemblance to Petra in Jordan.
When visiting, you immediately notice the soaring ochre sandstone walls that surround you, creating a monumental and almost otherworldly atmosphere. Reliefs such as the Iberian-style lion, harvest scenes, and musicians inspired by ancient Iberian motifs have been sculpted directly into the quarry faces, giving the place both an artistic and historical dimension. Alongside these carvings, visitors can explore archaeological remains, including traces of a necropolis and the ruins of a 17th-century hermitage known as the Ermita de la Vía Sacra. The grounds have also been landscaped with about 4,000 square metres of gardens, featuring native plants, pathways, and additional sculptures, making the site not only impressive but also peaceful and inviting.
