There is no obligation to travel, this step just allows us to make all necessary enquiries and work with our suppliers on organising initial details for your group while you advertise the trip to your school and collect deposits.
Get it right
This quotation and itinerary is a starting point. We enjoy this stage, spending time with teachers to make changes and ensure each school group gets the best itinerary at a suitable package price.
Confirm the trip
To confirm your trip a non-refundable deposit (normally 15% of the package price) is required. Once we have secured the main components of your trip with our suppliers we will send you a confirmation invoice. This will include a remaining payments schedule as agreed with you. Note: international flights are generally only available to be booked 11 months prior to travel.
Price guarantee
We know how difficult it is for teachers to ask parents for more money. Once we have issued a confirmation invoice the price will never change as long as the itinerary does not change and the numbers of travellers remain the same. So the price of the tour will not increase if flights and/or taxes increase or exchange rate changes. Another reason why EA School Tours makes teachers' lives easier!
Right after you go through immigration and customs your Educating Adventures tour representative will meet you at the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO). You will transfer from the airport to your hotel by private coach.
The hotel for tonight is close to San Jose city, located 25-15 minutes away from the airport. During the short drive, you will receive a brief introduction to Costa Rica and some recommendations for your trip. The guide will explain your itinerary in detail once you are at the hotel.
Costa Rica’s capital and the largest city in the country, San Jose is considered to be among the most cosmopolitan cities in Latin America. Downtown San Jose is the busiest part of town. A maze of streets and avenues, here you can find most of the city’s museums as well as several hotels and plazas.
Enjoy an included dinner at your hotel
This morning you will visit the National Theater, also known as “The jewel of San José”, a masterpiece in art and architecture built in 1897. You will then visit the Museum of Gold (an archaeological interest site), the Central Market, a place full of the Costa Rican cultural heritage and traditions, where you will be able to browse and buy some local art crafts and then the Metropolitan Cathedral.
As you travel around the city, your guide will point you out several historically important or main buildings in our city, for example The Costa Rica University, The Old Train Station, The National Liquor Factory, The National Supreme Election Bureau, the Asamblea Legislativa (equivalent to The Congress), The Metallic Building, some parks and various sites of interest. This will be an introduction to the Capital City, and information about the economy, cultural, politics, religion and general current events.
The Pierrella Ecological Garden is a special place run by a local family, your host William and Krista will start the tour with a little history of the place and tell you all about how they reforested the property and how the animals started returning.
Then you will visit the butterfly garden to see the wide variety of species, heading out on the trails, your host will show you other animals such as sloths, frogs, and insects.
You will then have some free time to wander the gardens and view local bird life. At the end of the tour, you will have a delicious local meal.
This afternoon embark on a fascinating adventure to unravel the mysteries of bats, which make up nearly 50% of the mammal species in Costa Rica, totalling 113 unique species. Join us and immerse yourself in the wonders of this extraordinary group.
The activity begins with a captivating multimedia presentation on the natural history of bats. Gain insights into their classification, diversity, adaptations, reproduction, threats, and more. Afterward, a knowledgeable guide will offer a safe and up-close opportunity to observe some of the bats that have been captured for ongoing research projects.
As part of the experience, you will also visit a demonstration site showcasing the snare net used in bat research. Here, the method of capturing bats will be explained. Rest assured that the bats are captured and held for less than 2 hours, ensuring their well-being.
This morning you will transfer 1 hour and 30 minutes from Sarapiqui to Arenal Volcano.
Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most notable natural features. Standing at 5,437 feet (1,657 meters), this volcano has been resting (i.e. not active) since 2010. However, it is no less majestic to behold, as it’s practically a behemoth against the region’s perfect skies. Rising above the rainforest that surrounds its base, Arenal Volcano frames the skyline with near-perfect symmetry.
Witness some of the closest views of Arenal Volcano on a guided hiking tour of the Arenal 1968 Trail, a route that winds through the lava flows from the volcano’s notorious 1968 eruption. Here you will see Los Patos Lagoon, in a medium difficulty trails through a very original landscape and great panoramic views of Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake. Learn about native plant and animal species from your guide and soak up the incredible views from an observatory.
After your hike, you will enjoy the natural hot spring with treatments ranging from water based (hydrotherapy), to medicinal clay (geotherapy).
Applied as a mask directly on the skin, clay releases excess body heat and absorbs toxins and other secretions. Because heated water can hold more dissolved solids, hot springs often have very high mineral content, ranging from simple calcium to lithium and even radium. The waters are known both from folklore and from their proven medicinal value.
The Los Lagos Hotel, Spa & Resort hot springs are an extraordinary gift from nature and result from the interaction of groundwater with magma from the active Arenal Volcano. The volcano’s heat and minerals provide a natural treatment for your skin as well as your whole body.
In partnership with a local organisation in the northern area of Costa Rica, you will join a volunteer day program. The volunteer activities will be at a local community. Some assignments can be painting schools and churches, maintenance of trails in private reserves, or reforestation efforts.
The range of activities depends on what the community needs at the time you are visiting, this is why the activities may vary. A lunch prepared by the community will be served as a reward for all the hard work.
This morning we will enjoy a hike to the top of the summit via a six-mile trail that originates at Las Pailas. The journey along the trail will reveal several different ecosystems. You will see Von Seebach, the main crater of the volcano, periodically spew steam as evidence of its geothermal activity.
The Tamarindo estuary tour offers a unique opportunity to observe the abundant wildlife of the tropical dry forest while learning about the unique ecosystem of the mangrove forest. While sailing up the estuary you’ll be able to see iguanas, crocodiles and lots of different species of wading birds right in front of you. Halfway through the Tamarindo mangrove tour, you will have the chance to get off the boat and into the national park. Here you can see the howler monkeys, raccoons, abundant diversity of crabs and other exotic animals in the treetops above.
