Overview

This enriching school history trip offers students the rare chance to experience major historical sites firsthand.

Beginning in Munich and Dachau, students explore Nazi history through guided visits to the Dachau concentration camp and the Nuremberg Rally Grounds and Trials Courtroom.

In Berlin, they trace the city’s turbulent past, from the Holocaust Memorial and Hitler’s bunker site to Cold War landmarks like Checkpoint Charlie and the DDR Museum.

The tour continues in Italy with a focus on ancient and modern history. In Naples, students visit the National Archaeological Museum and hike Mt Vesuvius before exploring the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii.

Rome offers insights into both ancient civilisation and modern ideologies, with guided tours of the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and fascist-era Foro Italico.

This journey brings history to life, allowing students to connect deeply with events and places that shaped the world.

Arrive in Munich

DAY 2
Location: Dachau, Germany
Arrive in Munich.  Be met by a representative who will accompany you the entire tour.  Coach to the old city.
 
Munich, often called the birthplace of the Nazi movement, played a central role in the rise of Hitler and the events leading to World War II.  

Visiting Munich offers a unique opportunity to explore a city rich in Bavarian culture and pivotal in 20th-century history. 

An orientation walk through Munich’s Old Town with the tour leader offers students a chance to explore the heart of the city’s historic and cultural landscape. As they stroll past landmarks like Marienplatz, the Glockenspiel, and the Frauenkirche, they’ll learn about Munich’s medieval origins, its royal Bavarian heritage, and its role in more recent history. 

Take your private coach on to Dachau where you will stay overnight.

Dachau and Nuremberg

DAY 3
Location: Nuremberg, Germany

After breakfast this morning, board your coach for your visit to the neaby Dachau Concentration Camp.

A two-and-a-half-hour guided visit to Dachau Concentration Camp provides a powerful and sobering insight into the realities of the Holocaust, offering students a chance to reflect on the human cost of intolerance and totalitarianism.

After travelling by private coach to Nuremberg, students will join the tour manager for an orientation walking tour, discovering the city's medieval charm alongside its significant role in Nazi history and post-war justice.

Nuremberg History

DAY 4
Location: Nuremberg, Germany

In the morning, students will join a two-hour guided walking tour of the Nazi Rally Grounds, exploring the massive structures designed to project Nazi power and examining how architecture was used as a propaganda tool.

In the afternoon, they will visit the Memorium Nuremberg and Courtroom 600 on a one-hour guided tour, learning about the historic Nuremberg Trials and the international effort to hold war criminals accountable.

Berlin

DAY 5
Location: Berlin, Germany
In the morning, you will take a private coach transfer to Berlin. 
 

Berlin is a city steeped in history, shaped by its role as the heart of Prussian power, the epicenter of Nazi Germany, and a divided city during the Cold War. Students will explore its complex past through sites that tell stories of imperial ambition, wartime devastation, and dramatic reunification.

In the afternoon, students will visit the Berlin Story Bunker for a self-guided tour with audio guides, including the reconstruction of Hitler’s bunker.

Berlin Exploration

DAY 6
Location: Berlin, Germany

In the morning, students will visit the Reichstag Dome (subject to availability) followed by a 2.5-hour guided walking tour of Berlin’s historical landmarks, including the Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, site of Hitler’s bunker, and Checkpoint Charlie. 

In the afternoon, they will explore the DDR Museum with a self-guided visit to learn about life in East Germany. The DDR Museum offers an interactive and immersive experience, showcasing everyday life in East Germany under the Soviet communist regime.

Berlin's Museum Island

DAY 7
Location: Berlin, Germany

Today visit Berlin's Museum Island.

Museum Island (Museumsinsel) is a unique and culturally significant complex located in the heart of Berlin. It sits on the northern half of an island in the River Spree and is home to five world-renowned museums, collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Museum Island showcases archaeology, ancient art, and 19th-century European works in grand neoclassical and modern buildings. The museums were developed between the 1830s and early 20th century, forming one of the most important museum complexes in the world.

Choose from:

  • Altes Museum (Old Museum) 

    • Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

    • Houses Classical Antiquities: ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan art.

  • Neues Museum (New Museum) 

    • Rebuilt after WWII damage and reopened in 2009.

    • Features the Egyptian Museum (home of the famous Nefertiti Bust) and Prehistory & Early History collections.

  • Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery)

    • Exhibits 19th-century European art, including Romantic, Impressionist, and Symbolist paintings by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and Claude Monet.

  • Bode Museum 

    • Located at the northern tip of the island.

    • Displays Byzantine art, sculptures, and coins from the vast Numismatic Collection.

  • Pergamon Museum 

    • Famous for monumental archaeological structures like the Pergamon Altar and Ishtar Gate of Babylon.

    • Currently undergoing long-term renovation (some sections closed).

This afternoon it's time to head underground and experience The Berliner Unterwelten – "Dark Worlds" tour, which takes students into the hidden underground bunkers beneath Berlin's streets, offering a chilling glimpse into civilian life during WWII air raids. Led by expert guides, the tour explores original air-raid shelters, showcasing artifacts and stories of survival in the city's subterranean past.

Fly to Naples, Italy

DAY 8
Location: Pompeii, Metropolitan City of Naples, Italy

In the morning, students will transfer to Berlin airport for their flight to Naples. 
In the afternoon, they will travel by coach to Naples city centre and enjoy a guided 90-minute visit to the National Archaeological Museum, home to one of the world’s finest collections of ancient Roman and Pompeii artifacts.

Pompeii Exploration

DAY 9
Location: Pompeii, Metropolitan City of Naples, Italy

In the morning, students will embark on a guided half-day walking tour of Pompeii, exploring the vast archaeological site to understand the daily life, culture, and tragic destruction caused by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Visiting Pompeii offers history students a unique opportunity to step back in time and witness the remarkably preserved ruins of a Roman city frozen by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, providing powerful insights into ancient life and disaster.

In the afternoon, they will take a scenic train ride to Sorrento, where they will enjoy an orientation walk led by the Tour Manager to discover the charm of this coastal town before returning by train to Pompeii for dinner.

DAY 10
Location: Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy

In the morning, students will travel by private coach to Rome, tracing the route once taken by ancient travellers to the heart of the Roman Empire. 

In the afternoon, they will explore the historic city centre on a sightseeing walk with their Tour Manager, visiting iconic landmarks such as Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon.

Ancient Rome

DAY 11
Location: Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy

In the morning, students will take a guided half-day walking tour of Ancient Rome, exploring Palatine Hill, the legendary birthplace of the city; the Roman Forum, once the bustling centre of political and social life; and the Colosseum, the iconic amphitheatre where gladiators once fought before roaring crowds. 

In the afternoon, they will enjoy a self-guided visit to the Capitoline Museum, home to an exceptional collection of Roman sculptures, artifacts, and art.

The Vatican and Via Appia Antica

DAY 12
Location: Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy

In the morning, students will take a guided two-hour tour of the Vatican Museums, viewing masterpieces of Renaissance art and ancient treasures, before concluding at the awe-inspiring St Peter’s Basilica.

In the afternoon, visit the Museo delle Mura, offering a unique glimpse into the city's ancient defensive architecture. Housed within the Porta San Sebastiano, one of the largest and best-preserved gates of the Aurelian Walls, the museum showcases the evolution of Rome's fortifications from the 6th century BC through the medieval period. Visitors can explore informative exhibits on construction techniques, view models of the walls, and walk along a 350-meter stretch of the original Aurelian Wall, providing a tangible connection to the city's storied past.

Then do a bicycle tour along the Via Appia Antica ancient road, offering a unique journey through ancient Roman history.

This historic road, dating back to 312 BC, stretches from Rome to Brindisi and is lined with ancient ruins, catacombs, and aqueducts. Riding along its cobblestone paths, especially on Sundays when the road is closed to traffic, provides a peaceful escape from the city's hustle, allowing cyclists to immerse themselves in the serene Roman countryside and its rich heritage.

Last day in Rome

DAY 13

After breakfast this morning, pack up and time is at your teacher's discretion before you meet your coach transfer to the airport.

If there's time, perhaps do some last minute souvenir shopping or visit the Museo delle Mura, the free museum in the ancient Roman tower along the city's ancient walls.
